Subject: [Leica] OT: Binoculars, what's top quality?

About 7 years ago my wife "bought" (as in I hinted and hinted and
actually made the purchase) a Leica 8x24 BA (s in black) armoured
binoculars. The factory rep was visiting Camera World in Portland OR
at the time and they were on sale for two days.

It was a lot of money; around US $ 830.00 as I recall. But i had
scoured the web and talked to a lot of birders and went with Leica.

This was back in my Contax R days.

I still have the, really like them, use them, have had NO problems with
them.

Very crisp imaging, really strong twillght factor, nice size, field of
view, easy to focus.

And I really like washing them with a few drops of dishwashing
detergent under the kitchen faucet - lenses and all - which keeps the
looking as new. I often pack them in my old rat Domke bag to "confirm"
what I think I saw before shooting with the R8 or 9 and a long lens.

Again, a lot of money, perhaps overkill. I know they've increased the
price. The new ones are nitrogen-filled but if you found a nice used
pair or either version, they'd be well worth it.

Good luck in your search for the perfect glass.

Bob

I'm thinking of getting a new set of binoculars, general usage and

Are there other "cult'ish" brands to look at, like Docter, Swarovski,
... that combine superb quality, outlandish price and "pride of
ownership (okay, snob appeal)?

Thanks all
