In researching this fellow's quest for "feeling" birds and the  
environment in his own life

I don't perceive his tool choice as "using a stethoscope or a  
screwdriver as a hammer."
nor as "atypical way, to be different, or eccentric..."

Having worked extensively with large view cameras myself
I can easily feel his need for this tool, his working methods, and  
inventions, etc.
to achieve his unique vision.

To imagine that he should go out and get a 300 or 400 mm 2.8 auto  
focus stabilized lens, a couple extenders, and a full frame sensor  
digital body, because that's "the right tool for photographing birds"  
would simply make no sense for this contemplative photographic artist.
