Hi Bill,

You know you are correct that there are many competing realities. I 
watched Stefan Daniels interview tape and it gave a lot of insight into 
some of those. But even before watching it I was pretty sure they faced 
two significant realities. Time to market, and technical resources. 
Leica deserves a lot of credit for achieving the impossible. It was 
Leica, wasn't it?, that said a full frame M was impossible.

The interview gave some insights into how the design was done. I don't 
think there was any concern about system upgrades. I suspect constraints 
of time and technical resources mandated that.

For the future I think Leica needs to take ownership of all steps of 
design, otherwise their future is dependent upon someone else. I am 
convinced this is something they can do and there is a hint that is 
underway.

With respect to quality and reliability I would implement a design for 
six sigma program. A lot of people think you can inspect quality in but 
that's not true. Quality is best achieved by detecting defects at the 
lowest possible level and eliminating those defective components before 
they are combined with good components.Using design for six sigma lets 
you understand what tolerance variation within each component can affect 
the final product.

I do think Leica uses methods in their lens design and manufacturing 
that are very much like six sigma. I don't think the methods extend to 
camera bodies, mainly because I have never seen six sigma mentioned by 
Leica.

I agree the M9 video barely scratched the surface of their manufacturing 
process. Besides Germany, of which we saw a small part, there is a huge 
amount of work done in Portugal.

I hope Leica succeeds with all their products. There really is no other 
camera company in the world like it and their lenses are wonderful.
