While trying not to be grotesque and overly upsetting to pet lovers, the
harsh reality of life and death is you have to be pragmatic when a pet is
distressed and nearing the end of life. Most vets pile on the drugs, hope
for a peaceful end, or else administer an injection which - while
compassionate and a sop to the mores of modern society - costs unnecessary
money. Better to go for a swift certainty and take a final stand behind
your sick pet. Swiftly strike it with a shovel or other heavy implement
which will put it out of its pain. It doesn't expect it from you, and any
pain is brief. Horrific I know, but at least its end is quick and certain,
and any suffering is short. I'd want such a finish myself - as long as I
don't realise it's going to happen...

Your opinion might vary.
