Why not just get a new hard drive; run Time Machine and use the new disc for 
backup?
Won't you then have a current backup of your entire computer?
If there are old items and you can access them on the old drive; copy them 
to your computer, then as Time Machine runs, it will back up to the new disc.
I use time machine, but also copy my photo library (and iTunes) manually to 
a couple of extra hard drives as well.
