Steven -- Stella was a neighbor of mine although I didn't know her
personally. She wasn't driving -- her grandson had pulled over for her to
add cream to the coffee. She initially asked only for $20,000 to cover her
medical expenses and time lost from work. McDonald's refused her initial
request as well as several other attempts to settle out of court, ergo, the
lawsuit that made her famous. The other side of her story can be seen
here: http://motherjones.com/kevin-drum/2011/07/truth-about-stella-liebeck

Of course I can't vouch for either version but it doesn't hurt to hear both
sides. FWIW, people who knew her didn't think of her as a litigious gold
digger.
