I've had good results using my copy of the 24-120 f4 VR lens (current version, on both a D700 and D800e). A friend of mine here in Alaska with a D800e has also had good results with this lens (and he is much more picky about lens IQ than me). It has also received generally good reviews on the GetDPI forum from people using this lens on a D800.
