Schwabenbr?u is not bad at all, difficult to get in Hannover though, only found it a couple of times so far. Flensburger Brauerei and Altenm?nster started it off with flip-tops, then a couple of breweries came in with darker beers, unfortunately one of the best, Wilkenburger, has now disappeared again (the brewery was shut down by one of the multi brewery concerns), the original Bockbier , made just down the road in Einbeck, is one of the oldest and best beers around (and still independent). The latest trend is light beers for young people - Becks Gold etc - but real beer fans are going for darker beers - Duckstein, Flensburger Dunkel, Einbecker Dunkelbock or even such extremes as K?stritzer Schwarzbier. Quite a few of the ex GDR beers have survived and are doing very well indeed - Hasser?der (rumour has it that the name was invented and that it's not traditonal at all) is now the best selling beer in Germany. Some of the best beers in Southern Germany come from small breweries around Coburg and Bamberg and the region of the river Saale (Unterfranken, Franken) with such strange brews as Steinbier(where the fermentation process is stopped by dropping hot stones into the vats) and Rauchbier (which tastes of smoked ham).
