Yes the M9 (and the other M's) firmware (assuming coding) is correcting the
images for vignette and colour cast (red edge or 'Italian flag' effects).
There's quite a lot going on to make the images homogenous at all actually.
The level of correction was amended over the M9 firmware versions too. What
the M cameras don't do is apply any distortion correction (or have any
options for dynamic range for example).
Adobe's raw processing has made large strides as well. The new tools are
great for managing this, as are some plug ins too.

There's much more to the visibility of noise than just the ISO number of
course. Content, exposure decisions, contrast, developing choices etc etc.
Low light may or may not be good light.
