Eric,

I'm not interested in flame wars, and I'm sure you know that, but I have
Nikon and bought it at the time because it actually did do better in
low-light. Well, to put it another way, it allowed for higher EI ratings
than the equivalent Canon did (10D).

You've mentioned CMOS chips a couple of times. I've noticed that when I
look through a gallery like photo.net or some other open-mike place, that
I can usually spot a Canon digital shot. I get a feeling like "that's nice
... it's probably a Canon". There does seem to be a visible difference
(difference, mind you, not necessarily saying one is better than the
other).

Do the low-end Canons (10D is the lowest I want to go, I think) now allow
exposure indexes higher than 1600?

Does the G5 use a CMOS chip like the DSLR's (not the same, but same family
of technology)?
