Carl, I agree with you for the most part. The optical bench won't do  
us much good in real world photography. Yet, I was rather amazed,  
after reading Joe's comments, when I did some additional "informal"  
testing of my M8 and 75 lux (which was troublesome in the 45 degree  
ruler context) and found it dead on in Joe's recommended parallel  
methodology.

What it meant to me: When actually shooting real subjects, close and  
wide opened, I need to consider the geometry of the range finder  
windows, lens and aspects of the subject which I want in focus. In  
the last ten days - I've achieved focus improvement when properly  
considering how the instrument is actually working in relationship to  
the subject - including whether I'm holding the camera horizontally  
or vertically and what I'm actually focusing on.
