Not at all! XPan is a way of seeing. The view is different from an M.
Working wise, it's same as an M really. It is a rangefinder after all.

I use them pretty much the same way. The major difference is really that on
certain street environment and landscape, the XPan view excels whereas the
digital M excels in high ISO (wow, I can get reasonably clean ISO 1250),
fast lens and in cases where I know I will have to shoot 100 pictures to
get even just one decent one.

I'd be very very very happy if they ever come out with a digital XPan.
